Yesterday I joined a campaign stall in Norwich city centre that was highlighting the pain suffered by animals in the latest unnecessary animal tests. Procter and Gamble has been testing ingredients in Herbal Essences shampoo on pregnant animals by repeatedly force-feeding them chemicals. Information about these cruel tests and why they are unnecessary is available at the campaign website: www.hurtfulessences.org
The stall was run by Dan Lyons and Angela Roberts of the Uncaged Campaign (who are both also Green Party members). Dan and Angela are touring the country, setting up their stall in different cities and encouraging residents to sign the petition and pledge not to buy Herbal Essences while the ingredients are tested on animals.
It was good to see lots of Norwich residents signing the petition. Indeed, in a telephone survey about public attitudes to animal testing for toiletries and cosmetics (commissioned by Uncaged Campaign) the level of opposition to the tests was higher in East Anglia than in any other region with 66% of the respondents saying they thought the tests were wrong.
There are plenty of shampoos and soaps being produced without animals testing. It is simply not needed and the pain and suffering involved cannot be justified. I'm pleased that Lush is sponsoring the campaign and taking a lead by opposing animal testing and not stocking any products that have been tested on animals. However, no company should be selling shampoos tested on animals.
It is time the Government banned the tests and the sale of products tested on animals - it is hard to believe that the tests are still allowed in the 21st century.
