The Royal Mail is a treasured national institution that provides vital services for all of us. If we allow the Government to go ahead with plans to part-privatise the Royal Mail we risk losing essential local services that would be deemed ‘unprofitable’ to private business. That’s why I am strongly opposed to Peter Mandelson’s plans to sell one-third of the Royal Mail to a foreign buyer.
The Green Party has consistently campaigned against the transfer of essential public services to private hands. We have already seen the impacts of privatisation on the NHS, BT and the railways amongst other services. Many people are concerned that a private company would put profits above services. For example, we could see reduced deliveries and cuts to rural collections. Part-privatisation is also likely to involve job losses at a time when we urgently need more jobs. By selling to a Dutch company we stand to lose money and jobs from the local economy. The Communication WorkersUnion (CWU) estimates that 50,000 workers could lose their jobs.
The Government is breaking its own manifesto commitment to a ‘publicly owned Royal Mail’, showing a shameful disregard for democracy. There is no public mandate for this move and there is strong evidence that it is unpopular with postal workers and the majority of the public.
Green Councillors and local residents fought hard against the Government’s attempts to close down our local Post Offices. I'm pleased that the City Council backed our motion supporting this campaign at last night's meeting. The Green Party is now seeking local support for the campaign to keep the Royal Mail in public hands.
