Adrian Ramsay, Green Party Deputy Leader and MP Candidate for Norwich South, is chairing a panel on civil liberties alongside high-profile guests this Friday 6pm at the Arts Depot in North Finchley.
The panel boasts a diverse set of guest speakers: Peter Tatchell (human rights campaigner), Afua Hirsch (Guardian Legal Affairs Correspondent), and Phil Booth (National Co-ordinator of the NO2ID campaign), as well as a pre-recorded piece from Jean Lambert, one of the party's MEPs.
Adrian Ramsay said: “Civil liberties are about protecting the rights and freedoms of individuals. We've seen civil liberties eroded by Labour but the Green Party is taking a strong stand. I'm proud to be speaking alongside some of the country's strongest defenders of civil liberties at our conference."
Ramsay has been highly critical of his opponent Charles Clarke and his position on civil liberties. Whilst Home Secretary, Clarke supported the introduction of national ID cards, and tried to bring in detention without trial for 90 days.
Ramsay, who is challenging Charles Clarke for the Norwich South seat at the General Election, continued: “The Government's plan for a national compulsory ID card scheme and database is flawed. Not only will it erode our civil liberties by more of our personal and biometric data being stored on Government computers, but the money for the scheme would be much better spent on improving public services like the NHS. The Government's gradual erosion of the right to a fair trial, and the right not to be held without charge, is undermining some of the basic principles of the UK justice system. We need MPs who will stand up for civil liberties."
