Trigger Does Poetry

24 March 2010

It could hardly be a more different role, but Roger Lloyd-Pack, the actor who played the intellectually challenged Trigger for more than 20 years in ‘Only Fools and Horses’, appears in Sheringham this week reading the poetry of T S Eliot.

Lloyd-Pack is using a break in filming for the new series of his current BBC sit-com, The Old Guys, to support his wife, the poet and lyricist Jehane Markham, at a poetry reading benefit for the North Norfolk Green Party. Roger will be reading Eliot’s 'The Waste Land' and Jehane will be reading her own work.

The couple have a home in Norfolk where Roger likes to spend as much of his spare time as his work commitments will allow. Although he is best known for his television work, particularly in 'Only Fools and Horses', and 'The Vicar of Dibley', Lloyd-Pack has played many leading roles in the theatre, including at the National Theatre, the Royal Court, The Almeida and the West End and recently in 'Widowers' Houses' by Bernard Shaw at the Royal Exchange, Manchester. He’s also been in Dr. Who and the film 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'.

Jehane Markham’s recent work includes 'Hermes', a jazz opera, and 'On the Rim of the World', performed at the Royal Opera House last year. She has published four collections of poems. The Jehane Markham Trio have performed at Salthouse Arts Festival and Sheringham Little Theatre.

Andrew Boswell, leader of the Green councillors on Norfolk County Council, is the Greens’ MP candidate for North Norfolk in the General Election. He said:

“I am honoured that Roger Lloyd Pack and his wife Jehane Markham will be giving this performance to mark the launch of the Green Party General Election campaign in North Norfolk. T S Eliot's poem spoke of the despair and meaninglessness felt by many after the huge human destruction of the First World War. It may resonate today for us with issues such as land, habitat and species destruction, and increasing social inequalities. The Green Party is offering fresh and effective policies for change and to tackle such issues. "

The Green Party poetry benefit is at The Friends Meeting House, Cremer Street, Sheringham, on Friday (March 26th) 7.30pm.
Tickets on the door £8, £4 concessions.
