Pensions are in crisis. Since the Tories abolished the pensions linkwith earnings, the state pension has not properly kept pace with thecost of living. Occupational pension schemes have run into trouble andprivate pensions have been mis-sold and under-performed. The Greensthink it's unfair that people who have worked hard all their lives areeventually denied the pension they were promised, leaving many facingpoverty and hardship.
Greens in Parliament will fight for a fair deal for older people. That means a decent basic pension for all of £170 a week - and freecare and support for older people living independently at home, insheltered or extra-care housing or in residential care.
Greens in Parliament will also fight for a fair deal for thoseworking in social care. That means raising the pay and training ofprofessionals, while recognising and supporting the valuable roleplayed by all carers.
Adrian Ramsay said:
“The Green Party's costed manifesto for the General Electionincludes a basic state pension of £170 per week. This is needed toensure that all pensioners can make ends meet, that no-one fallsthrough the poverty trap and that everyone can heat their home and feedthemselves. Maintaining services that older people rely on is also acrucial part of our pledge. That includes protecting day care centresand local Post Offices and medical centres from closure.
"It's wrong that any pensioner should be struggling to make endsmeet while bankers go on earning obscene bonuses for risky behaviour. Iwill fight for a fair deal for pensioners if elected as MP at theGeneral Election."
