The campaign to save two Norwich day-care centres for the elderly from closure reaches a high-point tomorrow (14:00 Wednesday April 1st) with a demonstration on the steps of City Hall.
It signals a final chance for people to sign a petition against Conservative controlled Norfolk County Council’s proposal to close the Silver Rooms, and the Essex Rooms, the latter in its 40th anniversary year. The Greens have been instrumental in obtaining more than 1,000 signatures against the closures and the petition is due to be handed in to the County Council soon.
Supporters including some of the elderly people who use the centres will gather for the demonstration, along with the Greens’ General Election candidate for Norwich South, Adrian Ramsay who said:
"The day care centres are crucial facilities that provide support, care and company to the many older people who use them. For some of the people who rely on the centres, it's the only care and company they get. I'm delighted that so many people have signed the petition and hope it will result in a clear commitment from the County Council to keep the Essex Rooms and Silver Rooms open."
Green councillor Stephen Little, one of the organisers of the petition, is now forming a new support group called “Friends of the Essex Rooms” Its first meeting will be next Wednesday (11:00 April 7th) in the Community Lounge at Melbourne Cottages, Union Street. Cllr Little said:
“We must keep this threat to the day care centres in the public eye. The decision is due to be made in June and we have to let the County Council know that the support to keep the centres open remains as strong as ever.”
