With Gordon Brown expected to announce a May 6th General Election this morning (Tuesday), Adrian Ramsay has issued a challenge to General Election candidates of other parties to sign up to a Clean Campaign Pledge.
Chris Williams, Green Party Election Agent, said:
"Public regard for politicians has never been lower, and it is crucial that we help regain the public's trust in politics. Honest and responsible campaigning by political parties is an essential part of this.”
Candidates taking the pledge will commit to refrain from personal attacks, not to mislead the public about who is likely to win and to make only honest and reasonable promises. The wording is based on a pledge that the Green Party initiated in the Norwich North by-election last year, which achieved support from the Labour, Conservative and UKIP candidates.
Chris continued:
"Voters are tired of negative campaigning, of insults and innuendo. Greens in the city will continue to campaign on the issues that matter to local people including the economy, health, education and climate change not on hypocritical and petty point scoring which is too often a feature of old-style election campaigning. We very much hope the other candidates will sign up this week to the pledge we’re suggesting."
Adrian Ramsay, Green Party General Election candidate for the Norwich South constituency, said:
"I hope my opponents for the Norwich South seat sign up to this pledge. I have always believed in campaigning in a positive and informative way, based on my record and policies. I hope we can have a mature and respectful political debate in what is likely to be a closely contest for the Norwich South seat at this General Election.
"Clean election campaigning is an important part of cleaning up politics, but if elected as MP I also pledge not to abuse the expenses system, to retain my home in Norwich, to hold regular surgeries for residents to raise issues with me and to respond promptly to communications from residents.”
Adrian Ramsay has also welcomed the news that the General Election is to be held on 6th May. He commented:
“I’m pleased that we now have a date for the election. In Norwich we have the opportunity to make a real impact at this election. We need a fresh approach to politics in Britain and Norwich residents can help ensure there are Green MPs in an influential position in a hung Parliament. I will be campaigning for lasting jobs in a stable economy and for the protection of crucial public services from cuts and privatisation.”
We, the undersigned, pledge:
To fight a clean, positive and honest campaign around the issues that concern local voters.
