London Assembly Member Visit Boosts Green Campaign In Norwich

11 April 2010

The Green Party General Election campaign in Norwich gets a boost on Monday (April 12th) with a visit from London Assembly member Jenny Jones.

She is coming to the city to help show the impact Adrian Ramsay will have if he is elected as a Green MP in a hung Parliament. Jenny’s successes as one of two Green AMs in London demonstrates what is possible.

The Green Members on the London Assembly, Jenny Jones and Darren Johnson, have made a huge difference and 203,465 Londoners voted to re-elect them in May 2008. In the following year:

  • They helped persuade Mayor Boris Johnson to cancel the traffic generating Thames Gateway Bridge proposal.
  • Secured an investigation to examine the scope for an amnesty for irregular migrants and to lobby government in support of this.
  • Following lobbying from Jenny Jones the Metropolitan Police's Human Trafficking Unit received funding for a further year.
  • Following questioning from Darren Johnson the London Development Agency is looking at a free insulation scheme for London homes.
  • They have had motions passed on climate change, fair trade, an earned amnesty for migrants, human trafficking, cycle lanes, air pollution and funding for a new station at Surrey Canal Road.

Under the previous Mayor the Greens had a pivotal role in the Assembly's budget-setting, as Ken Livingstone was unable to get his budget through without Green support. They continue vigorously to defend these initiatives in the face of cuts imposed by the current Mayor, Boris Johnson.

Jenny Jones is an archaeologist by training and former chair of the Green Party. She has been a member of the London Assembly since 2000 and was elected as the first Green member on Southwark Council in 2006.

In the previous mayoral administration Jenny was the chair of London Food, the Mayor’s road safety ambassador, and the Mayor’s green transport adviser. Jenny is also the former Deputy Mayor of London.

At 12:00 on Monday April 12th at the Green Shop in Dove Street, Jenny Jones will address Green Party volunteers about the very real prospect of success in the Green target seat of Norwich South before canvassing teams disperse to various parts of the constituency. Adrian Ramsay will lead the team visiting the Jex Road area by Marlpit Lane.

Adrian said:

“In the London Assembly, two elected Greens have had a significant impact. In the Scottish Parliament, two elected Greens are making a real difference. If the first Green MPs are elected at this General Election we can make a real difference at Westminster, especially if there’s a hung Parliament. The Norwich South constituency is one of the strongest for the Green Party in the whole country. The Green Party has been in first place in the General Election constituency for three local elections in a row. Norwich can lead the whole country on 6th May and elect one of the first Green MPs to have a real impact on the next Parliament.”
