He’s used to defending his manifesto, but Adrian Ramsay, the Green Party candidate for Norwich South, expects to be up against some searching questions from a new generation of inquisitors on Thursday (April 22nd).
Adrian, and other Green Party candidates from the eastern region, will be giving a news conference at City College Norwich on the Green Party manifesto and the progress of the Green campaign. But they have also invited the college’s own politis and media students to join the professional Press for the question and answer session. The candidates will also be available for one to one interview by student newsmakers or the regular media.
The Greens hope to play a part in enthusing a new generation about the workings of democracy. Worryingly, a recent survey of more than 1,500 students by UNITE, a company which provides student accommodation across Britain, found that almost half (47%) of these youngest voters had not yet been convinced that voting was worthwhile and almost a quarter (24%) were unable to indentify the difference between the three main parties or unsure of what they stood for. On a more positive note, the highest proportion (19%) of those students intending to vote named the Green Party as their choice - and there is evidence of an even bigger lead for the Green Party amongst UEA students.
Adrian Ramsay said:
"Many young people are looking for a fresh approach to politics at this election. We have a great chance of providing that in Norwich. I look forward to answering the students' questions and explaining why we need Green MPs in Parliament - to challenge the complacency of the other parties and to press for reform and regulation of the banking system, the creation of new jobs in green industries and protection of public services from privatisation."
