The Green Party has revealed two crucial new facts about the recent poll conducted in the Norwich South constituency by the Union of UEA Students.
The recommended minimum sample size for such a poll is 1000, and in this case the sample size was advertised as 801. But although that number of people were telephoned, the result is weakened since only 362 agreed to say who they intended to vote for. The undecideds were not taken into account in the published results, even though ‘undecided’ was the most common response.
Secondly, the results published by the Union of UEA Students were weighted for demographic reasons, which included false assumptions about which demographic groups were most likely to vote for which parties.
The raw data on how people responded to the question on their voting intention, before it was weighted in a questionable way, is as follows:
Undecided: 25%
Charles Clarke (Lab): 21%
Adrian Ramsay (Green): 13%
Simon Wright (Lib-Dem): 12%
Antony Little (Conservative): 11%
Would not vote: 9%
Steve Emmens (UKIP): 2%
The only fair interpretation of this information is that, with so many people undecided, the election is still wide open – but it does show Labour in first place and the Green Party in second.
Adrian Ramsay said:
"Norwich South is different to virtually every other constituency in the country in terms of Green Party support. Voting 'tactically' here to oust Clarke means voting Green. The seat isn't a priority for the Conservatives and Liberal Democrat support locally has been decreasing. We've been ahead in the constituency in local elections for the last three years and our support is growing all the time. Our support has grown more than any other party since the last election."
