Adrian Ramsay will be highlighting his commitment to making Norwich a healthier and fairer place to live, with affordable public transport, pensions which do not plunge the most vulnerable into poverty, and a real and sustained commitment to public healthcare.
Councillor Ramsay, who will be standing against Charles Clarke in Norwich South at the forthcoming general election, will criticise the Government for not putting more money into community-led support groups such as the Way Out society, which currently receives no public funding. He will argue that with 1 in 4 adults in the UK currently experiencing mental health problems in the course of a year, this is not a time for us to be pushing the issue of mental health aside.
Adrian will say "Our throw-away society leaves people constantly aiming for the unobtainable. We are told that we can have it all, and that if we don't then we have failed. Yet, the failure does not lie with the anxious single mum who struggles to pay the bills, or with the ex-soldier who is finding it hard to adjust to day-to-day life. The real failure lies with those who refuse to take these issues seriously."
Councillor Ramsay will tell group members of the Green Party's proposal for legislation to protect sufferers of mental distress from discrimination. Greens believe that those suffering from mental illnesses should be entitled to information on their diagnosis, and that the healthcare system should ensure compassionate treatment and support for patients.
In his talk, Adrian will draw on research from MIND and the University of Essex, which shows that an increased connection with the natural environment can have benefits to mental health. He will argue that by focussing on creating sustainable and supportive local communities, mental health could be significantly improved.
