Green Party Deputy Leader, Adrian Ramsay, will speak against the Labour Government’s privatisation agenda at a rally organised by unions across Norfolk this evening.
The rally has been organised by the Public Services Not Private Profit campaign, jointly set up by unions and organisations including the World Development Movement and Defend Council Housing. The meeting will highlight the increasing privatisation of public services, from PFI hospitals to academy schools, and how this is undermining standards and accountability.
Adrian will say:
"In Norwich Greens have played a leading role in anti-privatisation campaigns: in the successful campaign to keep council housing in public ownership; against academy schools that allow corporate influence over education; and in favour of bringing privatised council services delivered by CityCare back under direct public control.
“Improvements in public services will not be achieved by privatisation in any form, whether through sell-offs, PFI deals, academy schools or bringing in top-ups and user fees.
“High quality public services could be funded by tax payers if the Government would shift expenditure away from wasteful projects such as ID cards, close the tax loopholes on corporations and increase income tax for the highest earners. Moving public services into the private sector is not the way to improve health, education or fairness in our society.”
In his first speech as Deputy Leader of the Green Party, after his election at this year’s autumn conference, Adrian attacked Norwich South MP, Charles Clarke, for his support for more privatisation in the public services.
Adrian is aiming to unseat Charles Clarke at the next election, and challenged the vocally pro-privatisation Labour MP to fight the election on public services.
Adrian said:
"In July, Clarke called for more user-charging in the health service and education system. He claims it would be for what he calls non-core services - but I don't regard education for under 5s and over 16s or out of hours GP visits as optional or unimportant.
“And I challenge Charles Clarke to tell any parent in Norwich South that childcare and healthcare are not core services… If Mr. Clarke wants to fight the election on the future of public services, that's fine with me."
