The Green Party's National Executive, the ruling body of the national party, is meeting in Norwich tomorrow. It is the first time the 'cabinet' meets in Norwich; meetings usually take place in London.
Adrian Ramsay, Deputy Leader of the Green Party, will be hosting members of the Greens' ruling body at Princes Street United Reform Church tomorrow, Saturday 27 February 2009. They are coming to lend support to Adrian's campaign to beat former Home Secretary Charles Clarke. The meeting will be discussing the party's strategy for winning the Parliamentary seat of Norwich South.
Norwich South is one of the top prospects nationally for a Green Party breakthrough into Westminster. The Greens finished first across the Norwich South constituency in the 2007 and 2008 local elections. In 2008, the Greens finished over 3,000 votes ahead of Labour in Clarke's constituency, establishing Adrian Ramsay, leader of the opposition on Norwich City Council, as the main challenger to Mr Clarke at the next General Election.
James Humphreys, Chair of the Green Party and former Downing Street advisor, will be among the leading figures in the party coming to Norwich this Saturday. He said: "Norwich South is one of our very best prospects for a Green breakthrough into Westminster at the next General Election. The national party is putting significant financial and other resources into helping Adrian Ramsay topple Charles Clarke.
Norwich Green Party is also in a great position to make gains in the County Council elections and contribute strongly towards the election of a Green MEP in East Anglia this June (this MEP would be Norwich Green Councillor Rupert Read) and the meeting will also consider our strategy for these elections, strong results in which will greatly strengthen our case in Norwich South."
Caroline Lucas, Green Party Leader, praised the Norwich Greens for their "impressive" and "inspirational" achievement in becoming the official opposition here in Norwich. She said: "The Norwich Greens have grown into a hugely impressive presence; building a strong local party through hard work, whilst supporting local communities and offering the Norwich electorate a radically different vision of political will and hope. Councillor Adrian Ramsay is a real inspiration and has the full backing of the national party as he challenges Charles Clarke for the Norwich South Parliamentary seat at the next General Election.
"And that really matters, because Greens, when we get elected, deliver what we promise. We have a real commitment to putting social and environmental justice at the top of the political agenda. Whether we're talking about affordable housing or about renewable energy and energy efficiency, these are measures that Greens are already implementing in local authority council chambers up and down the country. It is certainly what we will continue to implement when we are elected to Westminster."
