Norwich Green Party today responded to news that the Boundary Committee has announced it will consult on two options for local government reorganisation. The Boundary Committee will be consulting on two options for completely re-organising local government in Norfolk, both of which it says meet the Government's criteria. The two options are: one council covering the whole county for all local government services; or two councils, one for Greater Norwich and the other for the rest of the county, each covering all local government services in their area.
Councillor Adrian Ramsay, Leader of the Green Party City Councillors said: "I strongly support unitary status for Norwich. It makes sense for Norwich as a city to be governed by one accountable local Council. In that sense the doughnut is a much better proposition than a whole county unitary - but I can't support either of the options the Boundary Committee is putting forward. Both involve one enormous Council covering the whole of rural Norfolk, undermining local accountability. I call on the Government to introduce unitary status for Norwich whilst retaining the two-tier system for rural Norfolk. The Green Party Councillors will be putting forward a case for this to the Boundary Committee's consultation."
The Green Party will formally respond to the Boundary Committee's imminent consultation on the two options to outline the party's reasons for supporting unitary status for Norwich and retaining the two-tier system in the rest of the county.
