Green Party County and Euro election candidates will be in central Norwich on Monday 18 May, with their green hard hats, overalls, ladders, drills and spanners - and ready, if elected, to build a lasting, 'Greener Future'.
A rally of candidates and supporters will assemble in the Haymarket, Norwich at 11.00 am. Many of the Greens' 51 candidates for the Norfolk County Council elections and the party's top three Eastern region candidates for the European elections will be there, before spreading throughout the city speaking to residents who are looking for a positive alternative to the three Westminster parties.
A Green 'construction crew' of tooled up and booted Green Party activists will construct a 'soapbox' stage - another element of the party's diverse campaigning - which has included traditional and modern methods, from door-to-door canvassing to blogs, twitters and website video-clips.
Monday's event comes just before voting starts for the County and European elections, when postal voters receive their ballot papers. The Greens are confident of gains in Norfolk and there is growing belief that Norwich city councillor Rupert Read, top of the Greens' Eastern candidates list, could become the region's first Green MEP.
At the Haymarket rally, the Green Party candidates will be setting out their plans for a greener Norfolk and Europe, based on a policies which could promote a million new jobs in the UK by directing local, national and European investment into a nation-wide home and business insulation programme, improved public transport, renewable energy production and localised food supplies - a way out of the recession which will also help prevent disastrous climate change.
Amongst the Green Party candidates on Monday, will be Andrew Boswell, leader of the Green Party County Councillors, standing for re-election in Norwich's Nelson Ward, and Rupert Read, who tops the Greens' list of Eastern region candidates - and who could become an MEP if the Greens win around 10% of the Euro-vote.
Rupert Read said: "There is a mood for change across Britain and Europe. The European wide network of Green Parties, already with 43 MEPs, is ready to give new direction to our economies and societies, slashing waste, reforming industrial and agricultural policy and directing support towards sustainable ways of living, providing lasting solutions not constant crisis management.
"In Britain, there is understandably a lot of public anger with the other parties at present. I hope people will respond by voting for the Green Party as a positive alternative, rather than giving protest votes to isolationist or extremist parties which offer only hate not hope.
"We want to clean up politics, not just litter. We need a much tighter system over politicians' allowances in Brussels and Westminster and we also need to curb and regulate influence over our Parliaments.
"We will invest in clean, green energy to power the nation and end the government inaction on climate change - an imminent danger to our way of life. Greens are good for you - in Eastern England and across Europe."
Green Party County Council candidate, Ann Bowyer, Dereham Town Councillor and Dereham Mayor elect, said: "The Green Party is demanding council investment in new jobs and training, particularly in home insulation and renewable energy, to protect the environment and to develop the Norfolk economy. With more Green councillors we will put pressure on the establishment parties to tackle the real problems and help Norfolk people. Our own listening and polling shows we are in tune with Norfolk residents."
