Young Green Party activists from around the UK are descending on Norwich this weekend to campaign for Green Party election hopefuls: Adrian Ramsay, the party's national Deputy Leader - who will challenge Charles Clarke MP for the Norwich South parliamentary seat, and Rupert Read, the Green Party's top regional candidate for the European Parliament elections in June.
And while they are in Norwich, the young activists will take part in the internationally coordinated Earth Hour switch off of lights at 8.30pm on Saturday - a gesture to highlight efforts to reduce energy use and combat climate change. Around the world people will be switching their lights off to show how much energy can be saved.
Around twenty young party members will arrive from as far afield as Brighton, Cardiff, Aberystwyth and Liverpool. They will be canvassing - knocking doors and talking with residents - in key wards identified by Norwich Green Party as vital to its election hopes.
Norwich Green Party officials say the event shows growing confidence in the campaigns for the two candidates, which the party believes can win their respective campaigns. Norwich South is a Green Party national target constituency for the General Election. In the 2008 City Council elections, the Green Party won more city council votes in Norwich South than Labour or any other party.
And just 10 per cent of the European vote in June could make Rupert Read the first Green MEP for East Anglia.
Norwich City Councillor Adrian Ramsay said: "It's very inspiring that young people are willing to give up their weekend to campaign for myself and Rupert. It shows their commitment and dedication and I am confident it also shows that many young people are looking to the Green Party to bring change to British politics and alternatives to a future of unemployement and climate crisis."
