Protecting parks, green spaces and allotments
Green Councillors have fought to protect the parks, trees and green
spaces that are so important for people's quality of life in the city
and vital habitats for wildlife.
- After a strong campaign by the Green Party and local
residents to protect the Wensum Valley and Tud Valley, the ruling
Conservatives at County Hall dropped their plans to build the Northern
Distributor Road (NDR) through these important natural areas.
- Green
Councillors put forward a list of proposals to make better use of the
city’s allotments, for which there is growing demand but a long waiting
list. We have suggested ways for more people to grow food on local
allotments, such as dividing up under-used plots.
- Green Councillors actively supported a group of residents in setting up the Grapes Hill Community Garden project.
- Green Councillors have worked with residents to help to protect local gardens and residential green spaces.
- Green Councillors helped to set up a Friends of Lakenham Way group to maintain this natural green space.
- Norwich
Green Party has successfully campaigned to save school playing fields
from being sold for development. We played a key role in the campaign
to save playing fields at Hewett School and Blackdale Middle School.
- Green
Councillors have worked to protect the trees that bring character and
natural beauty to many Norwich streets. We objected to the severe
pollarding carried out by the Council to save money (such as on Lime
Tree Road), and we have worked with residents to secure Tree
Preservation Orders (TPOs), such as the TPOs secured for twenty trees
at Kett's Hill. We have successfully pressed for new trees to be
planted on many Norwich streets and have helped secure council support
for planting trees at the Eaton Rise Hedge and planting bulbs on Gipsy
Lane.
