Public transport and cycling
Green Councillors have consistently called for better investment in public transport and cycling. For example:
- We successfully called for the City Council to increase
staff time spent on cycling initiatives. We persuaded the City Council
to employ a Cycling Officer to support initiatives for cyclists and
help ensure the needs of cyclists are considered in new developments
and new road layouts.
- We stopped LibDem proposals at City
Hall for reducing funding for the Bittern and Wherry railway lines that
run between Norwich and the Norfolk coast.
- We have pressed
the Council to improve safety for cyclists through cycle lanes, better
signage and action on pot holes. For example, Councillor Adrian Holmes
successfully lobbied for the installation of a sign on Pottergate
warning drivers that cyclists are frequently coming out of the
underpass from West Pottergate.
- Green Councillors have long
been calling for a Quality Bus Contract to give the Council some
influence over bus routes and fare prices – and we have persuaded the
City Council to back this. The ruling Conservatives at County Hall have
resisted this.
